What Do We Want To Know?

Leaving the hospital can be tricky for children and their families. Families need clear instructions to care for their child at home. Some families face extra challenges, especially if English is not their preferred language or find medical instructions hard to read. This can make it harder to follow care plans and can lead to more hospital visits.

This project looks at ways to make instructions easier to understand by looking at past research. The goal is to help all families follow care plans safely and avoid extra hospital visits.

How Are We Doing It?

The team is looking at past research studies that:

  1. Make discharge instructions easier to read and understand for families with different languages or reading levels.

  2. Help families feel confident caring for their child at home.

  3. Reduce problems like mistakes with medications or hospital readmissions.

They are also looking at how strong the evidence is and which methods work best.

How Is The Project Going?

The team has finished reviewing studies and is now collecting and organizing key information.

 Who Is Included?

The studies the research team looked at included:

  • Children ages 0–18 who were in the hospital.

  • Interventions that improve discharge instructions for families with language or reading challenges.

  • Measurable outcomes, like following care plans, caregiver confidence, and hospital readmissions.

  • Different types of research, including clinical trials, observational studies, and mixed-methods studies.

  • Studies published in English, French, or Spanish.
