What Did We Want to Know?
We sought to understand how pediatric inpatient discharge interventions tailored to families’ preferred language and health literacy influence caregiver understanding, confidence, and post-discharge outcomes, and to identify which strategies most effectively support equitable transitions from hospital to home.
How Did We Do It?
We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, searching multiple databases and trial registries, applying predefined inclusion criteria, extracting data in duplicate, assessing risk of bias, and synthesizing findings narratively due to study heterogeneity.
How Is The Project Going?
We are finalizing the review and beginning knowledge mobilization to share findings with clinicians, health system leaders, and researchers to inform equitable discharge practice and future research.
Who Is Included?
The studies the research team looked at included:
Children ages 0–18 who were in the hospital.
Interventions that improve discharge instructions for families with language or reading challenges.
Measurable outcomes, like following care plans, caregiver confidence, and hospital readmissions.
Different types of research, including clinical trials, observational studies, and mixed-methods studies.
Studies published in English, French, or Spanish.
